All students admitted to our Biochemistry Graduate Program receive a stipend to cover living expenses during the academic year and during the summer. We offer teaching assistantships, research assistantships, training grant support, and fellowships. We also provide fee remission support that covers most tuition expenses and fees. In addition, the university provides student health insurance. Some important items to note:

• All applicants for admission are automatically considered for financial support.
• Support is guaranteed for 5 years.
• Due to Bloomington’s affordability, students can live very comfortably on their stipend.

• Indiana University fellowships
• University Graduate School fellowships are available for qualified applicants and are awarded on a competitive basis. Ph.D. applicants for admission are automatically considered for financial support in these various programs. Traineeships supported by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) are available in the areas of Quantitative and Chemical Biology.
• Individual grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and others
• Many advanced graduate students are supported as research assistants through a grant to the research lab in which they are working. Most laboratories are funded by one to three grants from NIH, NSF, and/or USDA.
• Associate instructorships (teaching assistantships) are available for eligible students in all Biology graduate programs and require no more (and often less) than 20 hours of teaching-related duties per week. Associate instructorships provide an excellent opportunity to immerse oneself into a field and gain teaching experience, which are fundamental aspects of graduate training. One semester of teaching experience is required for completion of the Ph.D. degree.
